Greek Pullover Knit-A-Long

I was was VERY afraid I had GROSSLY miscalculated sizing, but my sweater sizing improved greatly after washing. I did modify the sleeves by picking up 38 stitches on the inside cuff right at the point where reverse stockinette becomes regular stockinette. I knitted 2 rows and then purled 13 rows. This gives the sleeves a little flare without having to attach any gauzy material. My arms are quite long anyway so the extra couple inches feels much better.
I tried waiting for better lighting, picture wise, but it never came.....

It has taken me some time because of Christmas obligations, but I have now finished my Greek Pullover!

I knitted the sleeves at the same time, and sewing up was very speedy!

Because I want to get on with my next exciting projects!

Because I don't want to have to go shopping around for the right colour of chiffon

Because I quite like the Pullover as it is

Because I know that on me slightly frayed bits of chiffon at my cuffs will end up very frayed and filthy!>

I have worn this already and am actually wearing it as I am writing this!

Well, the body is done! I was uncertain how loose/tight fitting I wanted it so I went 2" more than actual bust measurement. Hopefully I guessed correctly. Now I have moved onto the arms, and they are coming right along. I'm knitting both at once to be VERY sure they are exactly the same. Seems to work well. Am I really supposed to wash and block before assembling?
I am also using the Kid Classic in nightly, and am very pleased with my color choice. No pictures today though, I left the house too early for there to be enough light to do my project justice.

I am pleasantly surprised by this yarn, it's so soft! I was nervous because it had nylon in it (unnatural fibers being the devil to me) but I think it will turn out okay.

So I´m also done! Here is my Greek Pullover. I knit it in the laceweight from handpaintedyarns in Uruguay. I had to do some math because my gauge was totally different, but it all worked out. The ruffles are made of tulle..

What? Where is the ruffle made out of Habu yarn I recently spoke of, you say? Well, I tried to start it last week, and the yarn frayed like crazy the minute I cut the end off it. I don't know how anyone knits with it. I'm glad I can return it and get a credit at my LYS. I had planned on making a trip to the fabric store today to get some chiffon, but then after reading other's posts, and not being totally sure about the ruffle to begin with, I decided to wear the sweater as is today while running errands to see if I liked it the way it is. I do, so I guess I'm done! I do like the sweater, but I wish I had made the smallest size. My gauge was small when I did my swatch, so I made the next size up. The neckline is so big that I had to go out and buy a strapless bra to wear with it (not before this picture was taken, though, which explains any purple you may see peeking out around the shoulder seams). Does anyone else have that same thing going on? I don't think it looks too big, but I usually wear my things a bit tighter. I love the style of the sweater, though, and I love the yarn - the feel and the color. It'll definitely make an appearance at a holiday party or two in the next couple of weeks!

I had to do a couple of modifications and redid the neckline several times because the single crochet looked really awful in my tweedy yarn. Anyway, a little more detail can be found at my blog, I got inspired to start one along the way ;-)

I still can't believe what a quick knit this was for me. Sweaters usually take me an eternity to finish, but some free time after Thanksgiving plus the great pattern and my new found love for the yarn I chose (KnitPicks' Andean Silk in Hollyberry) all came together quickly. Unfortunately I've had an awful time getting good pictures of the true colors. For some reason the chiffon reads too pinky on my camera, but in reality it's a much closer match to the yarn.

Now for the downsides. The Andean Silk knit up buttery soft in my hands. Unfortunately it's a little itchy when it's actually on. I washed it and that helped, but on a scale of 1-10, one being slightly uncomfortable and ten being "Agh!!! Get it off me!" I'd put this at about a 2. I also have some issues with the ruffled hem. I like the cuffs, but I'm not much of a ruffle girl and the waistline is not where I want to go puffy-ruffly. I'm going to knit up another one in Cornflower Andean Silk, but I'll skip the ruffles and add more length. I'll probably skip the reverse sts too and use a picot hem and maybe lace at the cuffs instead of the chiffon. The unraveled chiffon is a nice effect, but I'm noticing that it keeps on unraveling. I'm afraid I'll eventually be left with just tangled fringe. But all in all I had a great time knitting this one and look forward to wearing it to a special Christmas party this year.

I finished my sweater this morning and it turned out very nice. I don't have pictures yet b/c it's a dreary Sunday so I never really got dressed for the day until I went to the gym to swim, so I've either had bedhead or goggle eyes all day. Neither of those make a pretty picture. I don't have ruffles on the sweater either. I may do something different than chiffon - some of my friends suggested this funky Habu yarn at our LYS, so I'm going to check it out tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have pictures later this week, in the next couple of days.

All done... except the ruffles.

The yarn I used was the one the pattern called for: Rowan Kid Classic. The colour is 'Nightly'. I only needed four of the five balls that were recommended.

I have already worn the pullover once and am quite pleased with it. If anything, I would probably make the body and the sleeves a bit longer, but the ruffles might sort this out anyway.

I know I haven't been very active on this blog, but I have been working on my Greek Pullover. See?

This progress was made thanks to a knitting retreat last weekend during which I parked my butt on the corner of a couch in a hotel room and knitted non-stop from Friday night to Sunday morning. (Well, that's not entirely true. I did go for a 12-mile run Saturday morning. And I did stop to eat once in a while.) Before the retreat, the back was the only piece done. The I-cords are also done, but they weren't before this picture was taken last night.

Instead of doing chiffon ruffles, I may use some yarn from my LYS that everyone at the retreat who is familiar with this yarn was suggesting. It's Habu, and supposedly very big and frilly and funky. They were telling me that this grey color would be PERFECT with this sweater. Sounds cool. I'll have to go there next week and check it out.

Hi, I finished all the pieces a couple of weeks ago and did a three needle bind-off for the shoulders. Then I did something that happens more often than I'd like to admit: I put it down and started a new project... I even went to my neighborhood craft store and bought chiffon because I was so excited that the finish was in sight! So I'm going to try to finish next week, I'm a grad student and I have the whole week off for thanksgiving so it should be a cinch, right? ;-)

I'm new and my yarn just arrived today. There are no stores around me that carry Rowan yarns and I recently fell in love with KnitPicks Andean Silk in Hollyberry, so I decided to give that a try for the Greek Pullover. Has anybody else done the same with good results?

I took some time yesterday and today, just sitting on the sofa, watching TV, and knitting, with the result that the body and sleeves of my Greek Pullover are now done!! I will post pictures tomorrow, I promise. :)

My question for now though - what do you guys do about the ruffles. My pullover is a kind of black or possibly very very dark blue, but I can't make up my mind. It seems to change with what light there is...

This means that black ruffles might look wrong, and also, I want to avoid looking like I'm in mourning. Any ideas? What colours will you use for you ruffles? Or do you get rid of them entirely?

Finally started!

Thanks to a road trip and another sweater that got to a point where it couldn't have been worked on away from my LYS, I finally got started on my Greek Pullover! I got some really pretty red Kid Classic, and I LOOOOOOOVE working with it. I'm a little off gauge (my gauge is close to 20 sts = 4"), so I'm knitting the 38" size. It's a quick knit; I'm already past the armhole bind off for the back, and I haven't worked on it very much. I'll post pictures once I have some that are interesting enough.

Hi, sorry it's been a while since I last said I'd post some progress photos. I think it's taking me a long time because I'm subbing the yarn and I always need to do math to make sure I'm making the right size. Anyway, here are my front and back, which have been done for a while. I'm up to the sleevecap on my first sleeve.

I really like the texture of Jo Sharp Silkroad Tweed DK, here's a closeup. But I'm guessing the drape is pretty different from Kid Classic so I'm looking forward to what it'll look like in the finished sweather.

This is the first pic of my work :-) I'm afraid my camera is pretty lousy ( I have promised myself a new one for Christmas!) but you get the idea. Proof that I'm not just inventing it! The yarn has a gorgeous sheen to it when it's knitted up - I sat down with Sherlock Holmes movies last night and got going with it!

I find keeping a bit of paper and noting down where I'm at helps to solve problems with the writing out of the pattern...

Not much to see yet, but I am loving the Rowan Kid Classic - so soft and pretty. It gives a lovely haze to the knitted fabric... I'm currently half way through the increase section, so there is a long way to go:

Is anyone else finding the way the pattern is printed in IK not particularly user-friendly? I guess it's to save space, but printing it all in one block makes it look a tad confusing...

Ah! I've finally bought the yarn! I thought you guys'd like to know, because I'm substituting (the Rowan is WAY too expensive here in the antipodean lands). I'm working in purple Naturally "Kid et Soie" which is 70% mohair, 20% silk, 10% New Zealand Merino (it's an NZ yarn). All of $8.80 a ball. Swishy! (My local wanted more than 20 bucks a ball for the Rowan!). And the shop I bought it from gave me a nice calico bag to keep it in! Even better!

I'll probably take a while to post photos as I'm not going to be with the home computer...but I thought I'd share. Getting a bit worried about the unfamiliar stitches in the pattern...but I'll be ookaay...

Just wanted to say hi. I started mine in August in Jo Sharp Silkroad DK Tweed in Ambrosia (straw yellow?). I finished the front and back, then set it down for almost a month! Anyway, I'm maybe a third through one sleeve, hopefully I'll be able to wear mine soon ;-) I'll try to take a progress picture or two when the weather's nicer, it's supposed to rain where I am for the whole week.

I'm back again, hello everyone! Hello? Is there anyone here?!

I've noticed it has gone very quiet here. How are people doing? Chris, how is your Greep Pullover coming along?

I'm STILL waiting for my copy of IK, can you believe it? It must have got lost in the mail, so I've emailed the nice people at IK and they are resending this issue... Trust me to have something like this happen when I'm hosting a KAL for one of the patterns. And I'm literally chomping at the bit - I have the yarn, I have the needles, all I need is the pattern and I'll be off, knitting this pullover!

Anyway, hope you are all well, and if you start on your Greek pullover, don't forget to post pictures or at least to link to some - I can't wait to see how they will all turn out!! :)

Due to wedding festivities and honeymoon I will not be online much from later on today until the end of August. I will probably get round to checking my email once or twice during this time, but if you want to sign up for the KAL and don't immediately receive an invite from me, that's why! So no need to worry, you WILL be added - it might just take a little longer than it would normally take me. :)

I hope you all have fun with your Greek Pullovers - I'm still waiting for my copy of Interweave Knits... it must have got lost in the post, and I have emailed them to chase it up. However, I will be in the US for my honeymoon, so if everything else fails I will be able to pick up a copy then!

I finished up the back side of the Greek Pullover yesterday. I have the front side cast on, and hope to get through a few rows today. I'm starting to think that the Clover bamboos are a little dull as I have a tough time diving into the loops when I k2tog for the decreases. Oh well, I'm not going to change needles now!

I've spent 2 days working on this so far and have 75 rows complete. I'm making this in the largest size so 75 rows has me through all the waist shaping for the back. I have a few inches to go before I start shaping the armholes. I'm using the Rowan Kid Classic in a cream color with Clover bamboo circs. and I'm really happy with how it's knitting up.

Well, I went for the Rowan Kid Classic in the end. After pricing it up carefully it wasn't really that much more expensive than the alternatives I had picked out. I ordered 5 balls in 'Nightly' from MCA Direct.

My almost hubbie will kill me when he sees that I have ordered yet more yarn...

I was thinking about substituting the Rowan Kid Classic that the pattern calls for, but upon second thought I may have to stick with it. It just looks so lovely, I don't know if I can resist...

Alternatively I could go for 'Fumo' (Lana Grossa), which looks like a good substitute.

Welcome to the Greek Pullover knit-a-long! Join us to knit this pullover from the new Interweave Knits (Fall 05) magazine.

This will be an on-going, open-end knit-a-long, which means that there will be no deadline for finishing the pullover.
